Take 2

The first journal that I created many many years ago, I titled it as "My feeble attempt at keeping a journal.  Since it has been a little bit (we won't discuss how long), I decided to do a take 2.

To start this off, a true story that I cannot make up.  Here we go...

This morning, the phone rang and a neighbor asked if I was busy or if I had time to run some local errands.  No problem, I don't have to be anywhere until later.  They said they needed some "checks" picked up at the local post office.  Checks?  No problem. I'll do that.  I get to the post office and ask for the checks from the post mistress.  She grins and turns around to grab a box that has holes in it and is moving.  She lets me know that when he called yesterday, she thought he said "checks" and was a little confused about it because he was really interested in finding them.  She said that when this box showed up today, he must have said "chicks" but his accent was a little Dutch-y.  I just started laughing.  Yes, a box of "chicks", very cute baby chickens, were what he was looking for.  All right, time to roll with it, so I take them, put them in the front seat, and hit the road.

At this point, I'm laughing so hard that I'm almost crying. These chicks are quite active and chirpy so that they can be heard on the phone when I'm attempting to tell this story.  So about 30 minutes later, after two more errands, I get to the neighbor's house to drop off these babies.  The wife and two little boys come out to get them and we have the following conversation...

Neighbor:  Is this all of it?
Me:  Yes, they just had this box.
N:  hmmm, I wonder where the rest are...
Me:  the rest?
N:  we ordered 120 chicks and there are only about 20 in this box.
Me:  120?  Um, that's a lot more than this box.
N:  yeah, well, maybe they'll show up this afternoon or tomorrow
Me:  um, well, if you need me to go back to get more, just let me know.
N:  sure, not a problem.  we'll check on them.
Me:  well, have a good day!

I truly hope that my face did not appear to have the expression of what was going through my head.  120 friggin' chicks??  first chicks versus checks, now 120 instead of 20ish??   Thankfully I was still wearing my sunglasses and hat which hopefully covered for me.  I have no words to explain or just comprehend this...

And this weekend I get to pick up 90 pounds of frozen chicken quarters.  Fresh babies to frozen dead quarters in three days.

This doesn't even begin to include the actual human baby situation this previous week.

Life is never dull.
